Late Aliu Mahama to be buried at the Osu Military Cemetary


Former Vice-President Alhaji Aliu Mahama died on Friday, November 16, 2012 and will be buried at the Osu Military Cemetery in Accra.

The burial will take place on Saturday afternoon after a brief performance of Islamic rituals at the State House.

The family of the late former Vice President had indicated that they wanted him to be buried at his birth place in Yendi, explaining that it was only proper and fitting for the remains of the former Veep to be laid to rest in his birthplace.

However, the state has overruled them, deciding that Mahama’s mortal remains of will be laid to rest at the Military Cemetery, Osu.

Communications Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced this at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Mahama’s family has yet to inform his 92-year-old mother, Hajia Mariama Mahama, of the death, fearing that the shocking news could overwhelm her to the point of negatively affecting her health.

Joy News’ Northern Regional Correspondent Mohammed Hashmin reported that somber crowds have gathered at Mahama family house in Yendi.

He said the mood in the northern town of Yendi was one of morose brooding and sober reflection over the loss.

Alhaji Aliu died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital at about 9:45 am on Friday, according to Communications Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

He had been on admission at the hospital for about a week. The precise nature of his condition is not yet known.
