Nana Akufo-Addo to explain rejection of election results to religious leaders

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, is expected to meet with the leadership of various religious associations today to explain to them why the party has decided not to accept the results of the 2012 elections.

He will also use the opportunity to inform them about the measures the party is taking to address its grievances regarding the election results.

Yesterday, December 19, 2012, Nana Akufo-Addo met with the leadership of the Trades Union Congress, explaining that evidence available to the party shows the results put out by the Electoral Commission are not a true reflection of the votes cast on December 7.

Speaking to Joy News, NPP Communications Director Nana Akomea said the meeting with the religious associations today aims to assure them of the party’s commitment to challenge the results through strictly constitutionally designated means.

He said it is important for the opposition party to make it clear that they will not engage in any acts that could destabilize the country.

Nana Akomea said it is particularly important for the presidential candidate of the NPP to meet with the various groups to explain the party’s actions because prior to the elections, he had met with them to explain his policy proposals and to ask for their support.

Meanwhile, the office of former President John Kufuor has debunked media reports suggesting he asked Nana Akufo-Addo to concede defeat to President Mahama in the interest of peace.

Mr. Kufuor’s spokesperson Frank Agyekum said there is no iota of truth in such reports.

He said that the former president is of the firm belief that course of action being taken by the NPP is the right one.
