The maiden Ghana DJ Awards which was held over the weekend saw hardworking DJs being recognized. Every genre of the Disc Jockey got their fair representation as the organizers of the Awards; Mercury Media shared the cake evenly to all the genres.

Actress Beverly Afaglo who doubles as the wife of ‘Choir Master’ (Eugene) of Praye fame, the Trio gone Double Musicians was called to present award to the Best Record DJ of the year. The mother of one, Beverly who could not hide her acrimony spoke out loud.

She prefixed her Award presentation by calling on all the DJs to play more of Ghanaian songs than other Nationals as the Ghanaian airwaves are dominated by the songs of ‘others’. As the wife of a Musician, she best feels the ‘lashes’ given to her husband’s industry by the DJs. In her own words, the emotional Beverly said “This is Ghana DJ Awards right? I would want to call on all the DJs to please play more of Ghanaian Music than others. We all travel, and when we go to Nigeria, they don’t play any Ghanaian songs on their Radios. They only play some in the Night Clubs and that is not even for long. But on their Radios, I can tell you that, they don’t play Ghanaian songs”

Her short appeal which was welcomed with applauds from the audience poked the DJs to be more patriotic than ever. “I think this will alert them (DJs) to stop what they are doing. Promoting more of Nigerian songs here than our own Musicians” this reporter eavesdropped on a worried fan who was sitting behind him.

Though various DJs have their reasons for this extensive promotion of Nigerian songs here in Ghana, what must be clear is, Ghana first!

I would personally want to path Mrs Beverly Afaglo Baah for this amazing poke at the Awards.
