Like every pregnant woman, usually, a baby is expected within 9 months of pregnancy when incubating the baby in the womb. There could be delay or early birth depending on how ‘stubborn’ the baby is. That was the case in the Ghana DJ Awards which had been postponed several times. When to expect it, no one was certain of it till the date finally came out; 15th February, 2013.
Even with the final date that was outdoored, many people were not certain as they were carefully monitoring the media for another postponement. Thank God most people arrived at the National Theatre to a welcoming and ready ambience. The show which was to start at 7 pm Ghana Man Timely started around 10 pm.
Before the Awards started, the Media men were treated to a very special buffet at the extreme right corner of the National Theatre when entering the main auditorium. That was a great lure to get nice headlines and lullaby reportage from the Media men. I could not resist than to queue to get served.
Derrick Kwabena Bonney (DKB) who is known across Africa from the just ended Big Brother Africa reality show who hosted the event was phenomenal. With his stand up comedy prowess, DKB ushered the audience into uncontrollable laughter anytime he said something. I have not seen DKB in his highest performance than at the Ghana DJ Awards. For once, he has refuted the claims that he is not a good comedian.
To the performances, only one of the Artist billed on the ticket and flyers showed up on stage. The rest did not show up. The organizers then massaged the audience with performances from other Songsters. That was a very worse treat and disrespect to the audience who came for the Awards with the hopes of complementing their witness with performances from their musical icons.
The Award presentations, the MC called on the names of local Celebrities to present them one after the other. Anyone who is analytical will truthfully voice out that, it was as if the MC (DKB) mentioned the names of the Celebrities in random but was not strategically planned. With infixes of ‘errrrrmmmm’ anytime he is about to mention an Award presenter’s name, DKB quickly glances the popular faces and calls out the one his eyes set on. With a creative random-non-popular presentation of the last 3 Awards, the audience was thrilled with that uniqueness.
Though many people had problems with the receipients of the various awards, the overall best DJ of the Year which went to Joy FM’s pride, DJ Black was undisputed. Everyone gladly accepted that genre without rolling eyes but most of them were followed by eii-this-one-hmmm kind of appeal.
My colleagues Publicists who flanked me at the event were in one way or the other in one accord with all my views about the whole event.
This is the maiden edition of the Ghana DJ Awards and I strongly believe the subsequent ones will be spectacular. To the organizers of Ghana DJ Awards, I salute you for such exceptional idea and hoping to seeing more improved DJ Awards as the years pass by.
