ECG Awards Night; 233times.net ‘s view

On the 12^th April last Friday the Banquet Hall came alive with colours of yellow, blue and white. The event taking place wasn’t a banquet for government officials or diplomats or showbiz concerts. Termed as the 10^th National Best Employee Awards Ceremony 2012 it was none other but our ever loving public company ELECTRICITY COMPANY OF GHANA awards deserving employees of the company.

Well with the current power crisis the country is going through many will be of the notion that they don’t deserve it and how ridiculous it is for ECG to hold an awards ceremony in reference to the current electricity challenges facing us in the country.

But attending the awards ceremony gave me a second skull of thought, well at least the employees admit the crisis and voiced out their pain of not being able to meet the expectation of the Ghanaian demand and looking forward to solving all issues to provide electricity in full to all and sundry. On a lighter note the MC who is also a worker with ECG shared a joke about the new christened name for ECG “DUMSOR DUMSOR” literally meaning on and off, on and off. They all agreed they had bad name out there and it was times to change it.

With that in mind well let’s not forget also that while we sleep these gallant men and women are working their backsides off to restore power and repair high tension machine and equipments. Life threatening situations from fire outbreaks to dangerous electric cables. Well it’s their job we all now but it’s a sacrifice also not all will do.

Graced by Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Buah Minister for Energy and Petroleum, the ceremony cum dinner began at 6pm with invited guests mostly employees for ECG making their way into the Banquet Hall.  The award did go as spectacular as thought with 11 employees making up it up to the national list. With a the Abisabis band at hand for refreshing music it was a night of applause and award as employees enjoyed themselves to good music and sat waiting patiently to witness who gets crowned as the best employee for 2012.

With a cash prize of GHC 2000 for the winner and GHC 1000 each for the two runner ups it was all tension when the 11 finalists where shortlisted to 5 then to 3. At the end of the day Mr Jonathan Asante Principal Technical Engineer at Accra East Region with his runner ups being Mr Haruna Kpakpo Saka Foreman Accra West Region and Mr Stephen Ackah Systems Operator Console Central region.

Well with smiles brought unto ECG employee face and lives we hope to motivate them to put smiles on the faces of the Ghanaian populace expecting to have electricity 24/7.
