Chemphe promotes peace in Nairobi

08Ghanaian R ‘n’ B star Chemphe was in Nairobi recently to record a song for the African Union Golden Jubilee celebrations. The song was written and recorded by Dan “Chizi” Aceda at his Aces Media studio, and features the golden voices of Kenya’s Amileena and rapper Rabbit, as well as Jimmy Hope from Togo.

I caught up with the Ghanaian heartthrob and sought to find out more about him. Chemphe had this to say about Nairobi: “So far so good, I’m loving everything that I have seen. It is quite different from West Africa. Back home it is hot, here it is quite cold and the shower feels like ice water. This is my second time in Nairobi and I feel welcomed. I feel like I’m home, the people I have met are nice people.”

He is famed for his chart topping hit songs such as Number One, Kiss Me and Left Over.

“When you read about me or listen to my music when I’m talking about relationships I normally don’t do or talk about the bootylicious kind of music. I believe in God and I believe that whatever we do here one day we will be judged and I’m careful about what I say. I have seen so many relationships failing especially with my aunties and our parents so these experiences drive me to be positive about my love music, and music that strengthens relationships.”

He explains that that is what leads him to do music that can be played at weddings or at home, and music that a man can give a girlfriend to make her feel special to him.

“Yes I am (in a relationship),” he continued, “Naturally I’m a one-man one-girl dreamer. And being in Kenya for five days is the longest we have ever stayed apart. So yes, I’m in a relationship.”

Chemphe has travelled the world performing at charity events and in 2010 he was named by the President of Ghana as an Ambassador for Peace.

The R ‘n’ B singer has his own charity project in the works.

“I have a project coming up called The Heart of a Giver under the Chemphe Foundation, which I started a year ago. I have been involved in other projects around the world but I felt that I needed to start one back home. I started a Double P project during our general elections to preach peace and fight poverty.”

“Now, Double P is morphing into The Heart of a Giver… I also spoke to some fishmongers who needed some resources to better and grow their business. I asked them to form group so that they could pool their resources to help themselves. The Heart of a Giver is about accelerating their livelihood using what they already have to elevate their economic status,” concluded Chemphe.
