Liverpool announces the signing of Kolo Toure

kolo toureLiverpool have announced the signing of Kolo Toure, with the central defender moving to Anfield on July 1 after his Manchester City contract expires.

Toure, 32, was a £16 million capture for City from Arsenal in the summer of 2009 but he rarely lived up to that price tag and made only 18 Premier League starts in the last two seasons.

With Jamie Carragher retiring and Danny Wilson having been released at the end of his deal to join Hearts, Liverpool are lacking in cover in the centre-back area. In Toure they have acquired an Ivory Coast international and experienced Premier League performer on a free transfer.

A statement released on the club’s official website read: “Liverpool Football Club can today announce they have agreed a deal in principle with Kolo Toure to join the club on July 1. The powerful defender will be registered as a Reds player when his current deal with Manchester City expires.

“Toure, 32, will arrive at Anfield boasting a wealth of experience having represented both City and Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League since switching to English football in 2002 and add depth to Brendan Rodgers’ defensive ranks ahead of 2013-14.”

Toure has won the Premier League title in 2004 and 2012, plus the FA Cup in 2003, 2005 and 2011.
