Ghana’s former President Jerry John Rawlings has described as “not right”, the apparent deliberate twisting of facts about the ongoing election petition, by commentators for propaganda purposes.
Mr. Rawlings said: “It is beginning to seem as if people are listening only to what they want to hear and not the findings and evidences that are being provided daily. This is not right.”
He expressed the reservation on Friday May 17, 2013 when he received the Asanteman Council led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at his residence in Accra.
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu is in Accra to deliver a lecture on the topic: “Advancing Together”, under the aegis of the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) as part of its annual Democracy Lectures.
The former President said the bias and propagandist commentary being made by different people about the hearing did not bode well for the case and its eventual outcome.
He said the warping of the facts of the matter could have dire consequences on Ghana’s stability and democracy.
The three Petitioners, Nana Akufo-Addo, his running mate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the main opposition New Patriotic Party’s National Chairman Mr. Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey are praying the Supreme Court to nullify the Electoral Commission’s declaration of President Mahama as winner of the 2012 elections.
They claim the elections were fraught with irregularities, violations and malpractices which cannot be overlooked.
President John Mahama, the Electoral Commission and the governing National Democratic Congress are the Respondents in the petition.
Key witness, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been under cross examination for the past two weeks.
