President, John Dramani Mahama has asked his ECOWAS colleagues to strive to work as a collective to tighten security within the sub-region.
The President made the appeal when the chiefs of defence staff of the various armed forces in the sub-region called on him at the Flagstaff House to deliberate on issues bodering on security within the sub-region.
Addressing the delegation, President Mahama expressed optimism about the outcomes of the ongoing meetings and maintained that cooperation was essential.
“This meeting could not have come at a better time considering the many issues of security that plague our sub-region; it indicates that our general security is a connected issue, no one nation can ensure its own safety without us working together for our collective security.
Democracy is more vulnerable to insurgence, international criminal crime; they are vulnerable to people who have criminal minds, thus, we don’t have any alternative but to ensure that, collectively our countries are secure”.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has also called for the optimization of military resources amongst the various heads of states in the sub-region as a measure of combating emerging threats in the sub-region.
“Over the years as a result of focusing our concentration to human development, we have on the whole spent less to security and defence, we are waking up to new reality that, you cannot have human progress in a situation of insecurity. We should collectively think how we can optimize the use of our human resources to ensure that our security in our sub-region is protected.”
