Yaya Toure is CAF African Player of the year

images (1)Yaya Toure was the big winner at the 22nd edition of the annual Glo CAF Awards held on Thursday night in Lagos, Nigeria, winning the CAF African player of the year.

The event was a glitzy affair attended by many dignitaries including CAF President Issa Hayatou, with entertainment from the likes of Lira and Dbanj.

Former Nigerian captain Sunday Oliseh and South African TV presenter Carol Tshabalala hosted the event at Eko Convention Centre.

The three finalists for the main award were Toure (Manchester City and Ivory Coast), Didier Drogba (Galatasaray and Ivory Coast) and John Obi Mikel (Chelsea and Nigeria). Mikel ended second in the votes, with Drogba third.

Nigerian under 17 star Kelechi Iheanacho, who is set to join Toure at Manchester City, won the the Most Promising Talent.

Twelve awards were handed out, with the host nation of awards, Nigeria, the big winners.

Other Awards were: 
African Player of the Year (based in Africa): Mohamed Aboutreika (Egypt) 

National Team of the Year: Nigeria

Youth National Team of the Year: Nigeria under 17

Club of the Year: Al Ahly (Egypt)

Coach of the Year: Stephen Keshi (Nigeria)

Most Promising Talent: Kelechi Iheanacho (Nigeria)

Referee of the Year: Djamel Halmoudi (Algeria)

CAF Legends: José ‘Mehdi Faria’ (Brazil, former Morocco Coach) and Bruno Metsu (France, former Senegal Coach)

Fair Play Award: Nigerian Supporters

Platinum Award: Nigerian government

Africa’s Finest XI: Vincent Enyeama, Ahmedi Fathy, Mehdi Faria, Kevin Constant, John Obi Mikel, Mohamed Aboutreika, Yaya Toure, Jonathan Pitroipa, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Emmanuel Emenike, Asamoah Gyan (Coach: Stephen Keshi)
