Kwesi Appiah promises: We will do better than World Cup 2010

The first local coach to have qualified the Black Stars to the World Cup has said he will finish Brazil 2014 at where no African country has ever reached

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah is bullish the Black Stars are destined to go beyond the quarter-finals stage of the 2014 World Cup.

Appiah admitted that the west Africans find themselves in “a tough group” made up of US, Germany and Portugal, but are determined to go a step further.

He noted that the four-time African champions are not going to the Mundial as tourists but to compete for the ultimate.

“I don’t believe there’s any country that are just going to Brazil to make up the numbers,” Appiah told The FA site. “We want to have the ambition and determination of going there thinking that we can do well.”

He added: “The last time in 2010 we got to the quarter-finals and we think this time we can do much better than that.

“It’s a tough group but if you’re going out there for a competition then you have to have the ultimate ambition, which is to win it and be prepared for any time you come up against.

“For me once you’ve gone through the first games and qualified then the confidence levels increase and for that reason you have to have the mentality that you cannot be afraid of anyone you meet.”

Appiah is currently in the UK with his technical staff to share ideas with coaches as well as monitor a few Ghanaian players in Europe. He will be at Anfield to watch Liverpool’s mid-week game against Sunderland.
