Nana Addo is not too old to contest again – Political Science Lecturer, Aggrey Darko

npp_nana_1A Political Science Lecturer of the University of Ghana, Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko has downplayed suggestions that the 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo is too old to contest the next elections.

“The age should not be a factor because what we are looking at is whether the person has the capacity, the competency, the impeccable track record, to assemble men and women who can turn the fortunes of this world around,” he said.

Nana Akufo-Addo announced that he will contest the NPP’s primaries to lead the party in the 2016 elections on Thursday. Many have criticised Nana Addo’s decision to contest saying he will be too old to run the country if should win. Nana Addo will turn 70 on March 29, 2014.

Speaking to Citi News, Dr Aggrey Darko further stated that what Ghana needs is a leader who has the capacity to solve challenges facing the country. “Even if someone is 100 years and the person has the capacity and the presence of mind to really navigate this ship of ours out of troubled waters, he should be allowed to do so,” he said.

He also stated that the speculations have ended since Akufo-Addo had declared his plans adding that key actors within the party would have to revise their plans and decisions.
