A 23-year-old policeman died after a trotro knocked him down from the motorbike he was riding on the Dodowa – Afienya road on April 17, this year.
Constable William Tenkorang of the Ashiaman Lebanon Police Station, described by his superiors as ‘a hardworking policeman’, was hit by the speeding vehicle and died moments later.
The incident
The Dodowa District Police Commander, Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, told the Daily Graphic that the incident happened about 5 p.m.
The driver, Lawrence Badu, 43, who escaped after the incident, was later arrested with the assistance of the Dodowa branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).
Supt Ofori said Constable Tenkorang, who was in police uniform, was riding in the opposite direction of the trotro, which swayed into the path of the motorbike.
“When the vehicle hit the motorbike, the policeman was thrown off the motorbike. The vehicle was also badly damaged and could not move again and had to be towed later,” he said.
Good Samaritan
The District Police Commander said with the help of some Good Samaritans, the injured constable was rushed to the Dodowa District Hospital, from where he was referred to the 37 Military Hospital for emergency attention.
But when he arrived at the 37 Military Hospital, doctors there pronounced him dead.
Supt Ofori said the mangled motorbike and the damaged vehicle had since been sent to the police station.
The driver, who is currently in the custody of the Dodowa Police, has been provisionally charged with murder.
Supt Ofori said the body of Tenkorang had been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for autopsy.
According to the Station Officer of the Ashiaman Lebanon Police Station, Inspector J.Y.Adjei,Constable Tenkorang was posted to the station two years ago after his training at the Police Training School.
He said the hardworking constable had come to work on that fateful day when the incident happened.
“He was one of our new policemen at the station but he is very popular in the community,” Inspector Adjei said.
