Otumfuo is on facebook but he doesn’t update his status – Prez. Mahama

6180507203253_4842930645630President John Mahama has praised the Asantehene’s touch with technology but has added a little request for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II  to update his facebook status.

“Otumfuo is on facebook” the President announced to a packed Baba Yara stadium and added “although the last time I checked his status he was behind”.

The President’s comment formed part of a persistent pattern of praise in his speech marking the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the King’s enthronement.

He called him a “wise man”, a “man of word and action” and credited him for making an old institution of chieftaincy relevant to development in modern times.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu, is the 16th Asantehene, King of the Ashanti. He ascended the Golden Stool on 26 April 1999.

President John Mahama was the special guest of honor. In attendance was Ghana’s two former Presidents, John Kufuor and Jerry Rawlings with his wife Konadu Agyeman Rawlings and former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obansanjo.

He found it refreshing that the monarch would be abreast with technology. There is a webiste manhyiaonline.org to brand his kingdom and keep a facebook page.

The Asantehene’s page was created four years ago on November 9th 2010.  He recorded his excitement in a post, saying  “to all my fans, the Asantehene, King of the Ashanti has decided to come on facebook. You have all wanted it and now I am on for you”.

But he last updated his facebook status on February 2, 2013. To date, the page has 9,112 likes.

The President known for being active on social media, asked the 64 year old Otumfuo to update his facebook page – request the King nodded in approval and with uncontained laughter.

It is not known if the Asantehene is on Whatsapp or has a twitter account. Although keeping an instagram page may be a request too much for the 64-year old King.
