Agencies that provide Identification card services to Ghanaians have been challenged to come together and strategize ways of coming up with a single all-purpose identity card to serve Ghanaians.
President Mahama, who commissioned a Vessel Traffic Monitoring System (VTMS) at the Ghana Maritime Authority noted that technology exists that help reduce the burden of carrying numerous identity cards.
“Every Ghanaian today, carries many identification cards, why can’t we have one card that has one social security number that covers everything?”, President Mahama questioned.
Currently, Birth Certificates, Voter Identification Card, National Identification Card, Passports, Social Security Card and Drivers License card, all serve as forms of identification, all of which request an individual’s biometric data.
The President believes, with collaboration, a common identification card can be developed.
“This VTMS and the corporation that has been exhibited must be a challenge to all the identification card authorities to convene a meeting and see how we can bring and merge all these cards so that Ghanaians can carry one card that is multi-purpose that serves them in every identification that they need to have”, President Mahama observed.
