Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by any yeasts of the Candida species, usually taking one of two main forms. Prolonged infections can have a variety of negative consequences, depending on what type you have, so it’s a good idea to see your doctor as soon as possible. In most cases, infections caused by Candida are not serious and are easy to clear up but some may require serious medication or treatment for larger medical problems. This wikiHow will give you the basics on the two major forms, as well as suggestions of how to avoid infections in the future. Just see the sections listed above to find the information you need.
Yeast infections are Candida infections around or in the genitals, almost always of the vagina. These are common infections in women, but men can technically get them as well.
Get tested first. If you do not have a yeast infection but take over the counter medications for it, you can breed more resistant Candida in your body, making you more prone to infection. It is best to get a test from your local health clinic to see if you do have Candida, unless there is zero reason to think that it may be something else (for example, if you have never been sexually active).
Take the medication. You can get over the counter medication, usually a “pill” (but sometimes and ointment or lotion) that is inserted into the vagina, which will clear up the infection if you follow the directions. There are also a few different medications your doctor can prescribe if you want to get rid of it more quickly. [1]
Change your underwear frequently. Sometimes mild Candida infections can clear themselves up in a week if you take a few basic precautions. One is to change your underwear as often as you possible can, every day, until it clears up.
Refrain from sex. Lubes, condoms, and even your partner’s natural bacteria can make your infection worse or cause it to begin with. Stop having sex until your infection gets better and you identify the root cause.
Finish a course of antibiotics. If you developed a Candida infection because of having to take a long course of antibiotics (which is common), wait for the round of antibiotics to finish and clear your system. Often this will be all it takes to clear up the infection, as your body naturally returns to its normal rhythm.
Evaluate medications. Reduce antibiotics, ulcer medications, steroids and estrogen as they may increase the growth of Candida in the body. Discuss options of reducing or replacing these medications with your doctor.
Follow the preventative measures. The section on preventative measures includes other suggestions which can help clear up existing infections as well as prevent them in the future. See the section for more suggestions about steps you can take but remember: if it doesn’t clear up on it’s own within a few days, you need to see a doctor.
Thrush is a Candida infection of the mouth or throat. Most common in children, it can also occur in adults with compromised immune systems or who are taking certain drugs.
Do not treat infants with thrush. Infantile thrush will usually get better on it’s own. Consult with your pediatrician for recommended courses of action, but getting rid of pacifiers and stopping breast feeding may be necessary if repeat infections occur.
Consult with your doctor. If you are an adult with a Candida infection, this is usually the sign of a serious, larger problem (unless you are taking antibiotics or steroids). The best way to treat thrush in adults is to take medication which will need to be prescribed by a doctor. There are a number of medications available and your doctor will determine which is best for you.
Eat yogurt. Eat yogurt which contains active cultures. This can help to fight off the infection, especially if it is a weak infection.
Drink plenty of water. Drink at least 68 oz. (2 L) of water each day. Water is a natural cleanser that carries toxins away from your body, playing a part in expelling Candida.
Eat less sugar. Sugar feeds the Candida in your system, allowing it to thrive, grow, and reproduce. If you want to reduce you chances of Candida infections, eat as little sugar in your diet as possible.
Eat a healthy diet. Eat a healthy balanced diet to help prevent Candida infections. A poor diet can impact your immune system, making you more prone to infections.
Chill out. Though it isn’t proven by medical research, many women find that stress can make them more prone to infections. Try to work on reducing stress and eliminating sources of stress in your life.
