The receipts are in from First Lady Michelle Obama’s China trip, and it’s not looking good for the taxpayers.
Last month, the first lady, her daughters and her mother spent a week touring China in efforts to increase students’ awareness of education and opportunities.
But Michelle was criticized for her luxurious trip. Her critics charged that she only went to China for vacation and that the trip really had no diplomatic meaning behind it.
Well now we’re learning that Mrs. Obama stayed at the extravagant Shangri-La hotel in Chengdu, China, which cost $222,000 for a one-night stay for the Obamas and their entourage.
Rather than justifying the cost of the Shangri-La, the first lady’s office noted that at least they didn’t stay at the Ritz-Carlton.
“The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu expressed interest and were considered. In preliminary price comparisons, the cost was sufficiently more than the Shangri-La,” the statement read. “We requested a price reduction but a great cost difference remained for the both the Executive Junior Suites, that will serve as control rooms, and the Presidential Suite.”
