President John Mahama has returned to Accra after a oneday visit to Guinea-Bissau for the inauguration of the newly-elected President Jose Mario Vaz. As the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, President Mahama’s participation underscored the significant role being played by Member States of the Economic Community of West African States in the stabilization and democratization process in Guinea-Bissau.
On the margins of the ceremony in Bissau, he held discussions with other West African leaders in attendance, including Presidents Yayi Boni of Benin, Macky Sall of Senegal and Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of Nigeria. President Mahama also had interactions with the presidents of Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Niger, the Gambia, and Cape Verde who were also present.
On the way back to Accra, President Mahama made a stopover in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, where he held consultations with President Alassane Ouattara (who could not attend the inauguration in Bissau) over issues affecting the West African sub-region.
