What caused Vodafone’s June network outage revealed

An electrical surge has been identified as the cause of Vodafone’s blackout early this month.
Customers of Vodafone experienced a network outage from the late hours of 2nd June, 2014 to the 3rd of which left them unable to make or receive calls, send or receive text and use the internet.
According to Vodafone a thorough root cause analysis programme, conducted to identify the cause of the outage revealed that the outage was caused by an electrical surge.
The surge resulted in 6 boards in 3 of its routers not responding correctly.
Vodafone says it has replaced the six boards and also taken additional steps to improve further the reliability of its network in the future.
Chief Executive Officer for Vodafone Ghana, Haris Broumidis, said the systems have been performing well since the remedial steps were introduced. “We have conducted several network performance tests, which show the network experience is back to normal and we are also pleased to report that our network traffic rapidly recovered to the levels we observed before the incident.”
Meanwhile a detailed Technology and Power audit is also being undertaken by the mobile giant to ensure the future strength of its network.
The audit will be shared with the National Communications Authority.
In a related development the mobile operator has announced its Enterprise customers will receive a discount on their bills at the end of June as compensation for the outage.
Vodafone on 5 June began compensating its customers over the outage.
So far majority of its prepaid customers have received compensation.
Vodafone also adds that full details of the compensation plan which was discussed and approved by the National Communications Authority will be published soon.
