My comment after hearing the Deputy Sports Minister, Joseph Yamin saying that NDC supporters would be the greatest beneficiaries of the world cup was “all these people are Ministers in Ghana.”
Although after debating on this with discerning friends, some supported his claim that he was being frank because that is always the trend since Ghana qualified for World Cup in the Kufour Administration. For a moment I thought I was overacting because defending that, even though this is the case, a Minister should not make it public was refuted by most of my colleagues until I followed the radio to sieve discussions to know whether I had a clear case or not.
As usual, it was politicized by callers and pundits of popular political discussions on radio. I was eagerly waiting to hear Abdul Malik Kwaku Baako and Kwesi Pratt Jr to inform my thoughts on this case. Unbelievably and for the first time since I started following politics, both were on the same page.
In summary, Kwaku Baako posited that, the Minister should be sacked and Kwesi Pratt opined “any person who politicizes football, say this is NDC vrs NPP; he is a nation wreckerdispense quickly with the NDC-NPP politics that you’re interspersing with soccer.” Not because they shared my thought, they have demonstrated that, Ghana first in all things.
A Minister could politicize anything else but for a game which brings the nation together, the Minister was childish to speak like that. He has willingly removed his clothes in public for Ghanaians to see and judge the size of his ‘manhood.’
In my opinion and reechoing and siding with Kwaku Baako, the Hon. Minister should be sacked immediately the Black Stars come home from Brazil (after the semi-finals hopefully); the world cup should be his end of service benefit .
For such a person to be in government, in a country suffering from constipated economy, it does not surprise me that the cedi continues to fall drastically. He has done his best and is better an NDC party executive than a Minister of state.
Though it would be the President’s prerogative to retain or sack him but he should be fair as well in his final decision.
We are watching them with one eye!
