Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, immediate past General Secretary of the largest opposition party believes President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC is best placed to campaign for Nana Akufo-Addo, given his performance since he assumed office in January 2013.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show on Monday July 7, 2014, Mr Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John declared: “Nana Addo will win the NPP (flagbearer) contest hands down and win the 2016 general elections”.
“It is clear. If you look at all the own goals that President Mahama is scoring you don’t need anyone from NPP to lead the campaign. John Mahama is already doing the campaign for us.
“He is the official campaign manager for Nana [Akufo-Addo]. All the rest of us are just supporting him”.
Nana Akufo-Addo was the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2008 and 2012 elections, but failed to win the ultimate.
He is set to file his nomination papers later today to contest in the 2014 flagbearer contest. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen and Francis Addai Nimoh filed their papers on Friday July 4, 2014.
Also expected to file today are Second deputy Speaker of Parliament Joe Ghartey, former Information Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng. Asuogyaman MP Kofi Osei Ameyaw and former Trade Minister Kofi Konadu Apraku have also picked up nomination forms but have not indicated when they will file.
Deadline for submission of forms is 5pm today.
