A massive nationwide demonstration declared by Organised Labour is underway across the country.

The demonstration, which aims at protesting what organisers say is the poor economic state of the country, is happening simultaneously across the country.

Workers in both formal and informal sectors of the economy, including commercial transport operators and shop owners, are participating in the demonstrations.

In Accra, over a 1000 demonstrators converged on the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, chanting war songs and holding placards which bore inscriptions such as ‘President Mahama do something before all of us die”, ‘Too much incompetence in the system’, ‘Rise up workers of Ghana’, Our economy is now on life support.

The demonstrators plan to march through the streets of Accra, moving from Obra Spot to Adabraka, Trust Towers, TUC area, National Theatre. They will then proceed to Hearts Park, where a petition will be presented to the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Haruna Iddrisu.

One of the key demands of organised Labour has been for fuel prices to be drastically reduced.

Some of the demonstrators who work in the transport industry have been reiterating this demand, stressing that the recent 26 per cent increment in the prices of fuel has adversely affected their business.

Hundreds of police officials have been deployed to protect the demonstrators.
