300 prostitutes invade ECOMOG in Accra

prostitutesReports say more than 300 sex workers have invaded ECOMOG at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

Their presence in the area, squatters noted has increased criminal activities.

Usman Mohammed, one of the over 2,000 squatters at the slum built around the railway lines told Joy News’ Kwakye Afreh-Nuamah in pidgin language “ashawo women (prostitutes), dem be plenty for here. Ino be say 10 or 50; more than a dozen.”

According to Usman, the slum has become a safe haven for sex workers and that, city authorities ought to take action as a matter of urgency.

Most of the homes there are wooden shacks and very close to the rail lines.

During the day, the sex workers parade along the rail lines in a bid to attract male customers.

It was observed that about eight of them, who lived in the area wore very revealing dresses and lined up along the rail lines.

One of the ladies told Joy News “we are here just to relax and in the evening, go out to find money.”

“Every two or three weeks, soldiers come to chase out drug peddlers from here,” one person said in a frustrated tone.

A mother of two girls, Vida, also mentioned “as a mother, if you don’t take care of your kids; they will grow up thinking there is nothing wrong with prostitution because they may associate with these sex workers and may even end up as sex workers too.”

Sadique, a cobbler in the area said ‘’I want the AMA [Accra Metropolitan Assembly] to demolish their structures. I am a shoemaker here but even if it affects my place, I won’t complain because I want the future to be good.”
