The former Red Devils winger reveals that he warned his departing team-mate of the ‘responsibility’ of wearing the club’s No.7 shirt but believes that the Argentine will succeed
Cristiano Ronaldo has tipped former Real Madrid team-mate Angel Di Maria to succeed at Manchester United.
The Argentine sealed a British-record transfer to Old Trafford on Tuesday after falling down the pecking order at Carlo Ancelotti’s side and has been given his colleague’s old No.7 jersey.
Ronaldo, who spent six trophy-laden seasons with United, believes that the move is exactly what Di Maria needs and is confident that he can help United to turn around their poor start to the Premier League season.
“It’s good for him,” the Madrid star told reporters of Di Maria. “Manchester [United] is one of the best clubs in the world, will be good for him and I wish the best of luck for him.
“He deserves it, he’s a fantastic player. He’s going to do well in Manchester United.
“I said to him, ‘No.7 is a big responsibility’, but I think he will be able to take that shirt because he’s a fantastic player.”
Di Maria has spoken of his desire to emulate Ronaldo and do justice to the No.7 shirt, though he has admitted that he had not wanted to leave the Santiago Bernabeu.
