RE: Ghana Comedy: After DKB what next? NOTHING…..
I write in response to the above captioned article written by Pasino Fred and published on your website on Monday September 8 2014. I would say that Pasino Fred exercised his democratic intellect and so I wouldn’t discredit him for that.
Ghana Comedy: After DKB what next? Augustin Dennis, Khemikal, James Brown, Jacintha etc. Don’t forget KSM and David Oscar are still alive.
Ghana cried for their own after being bombarded with Nigerian stories and recycling of Comedians from Nigeria. This gave an opportunity to take a risk to bring our own DKB to the show (1018 Laughs) which he glorified himself and set his people free at last. All Ghanaian comedians wanted was someone (any comedian) to be given the platform and that opportunity was seized by DKB when he was called upon.
The rest of the stand up comedy team in Ghana is bracing themselves for other opportunities. The crave for the platform was not adhered to. Platforms were lacking in the past but now thanks to David Oscar with his Corporate Comedy Series, DKB’s DKB Live – Campus Tour and James Brown’s monthly club series – Comedy Bar, these comedians have platforms to polish their acts, try new stuff and build their confidence.
Again, talent takes time to polish. There are early bloomers and late bloomers when it comes to life. Where others blossom early in life it doesn’t mean does who haven’t blossomed yet will never make it. If the Ghanaian is encouraged, criticized constructively whilst giving them the platforms they will get there. Upcoming Nigerian comedians were given the 1016 and 1017 platforms. Nigerians have been patient to develop their own so what stops the Ghanaian from doing same? Our markets have been a dumping ground for foreign companies’ mostly Chinese companies to test market their products. Inspite of all the troubles, the Ghanaian is using it. If DKB was encouraged when he flopped according to Pasino Fred,we wouldn’t be having this discussion currently.
Augustin Dennis, who happened to study in Malaysia, took advantage of the platforms and the encouragement from the Asian people to develop his comedy act through the Comedy Club and other platforms. He shared the stage with some notable comedians in America, Europe and Africa who happened to perform in Asia including Matt Price (UK) and Basket Mouth (NIG) just to mention a few. Even though there isn’t much platforms in Ghana as compared to Malaysia and other Asian countries, Augustin Dennis took a bold decision to return to Ghana after about 3 years of comedy in Asia to help turn around the Comedy industry in his motherland. Ever since he arrived he has been doing marvelously well even though he is still in the transition period. (You can get some of his videos on Youtube and on the Corporate Comedy Series channel on Youtube)
I urge all the public, events organizers and Pasino to come to the monthly Comedy Bar at Silver Lounge, Accra Mall every last Saturday of the month to see him and his colleagues in action. I also extend a hand of invitation to Pasino Fred and others who share his thoughts to come to Takoradi this Friday at the Corporate Comedy Series to be held at the Atlantic Hotel and afterwards give your verdict.
To all those in the same Comedy business see this as a challenge, accept the challenge and prove the critiques wrong.
God Bless Ghana and Long Live GH Comedy.
