Bench warrant for self-styled abortion Doctor

A bench warrant has been issued by an Accra High Court for the arrest of Joseph Drah, the self-styled abortion specialist at Universal Mission Clinic who allegedly bonked women before aborting their babies.

This was after the suspect failed to appear before the court presided over by Justice Adbulai Iddrisu for a continuation of his trial on running an abortion clinic without license.

The investigator in the case was not in court to inform the court on whether they had heard anything from the suspect, who went underground just before the legal vacation without any explanation.

Justice Iddrisu consequently had the case adjourned to October 24, 2014 for the principal state attorney, Mrs Evelyn Keelson, to play the video recording by ace investigative reporter Anas Aremeyaw of the alleged activities of the doctor.

The suspect, who is on a GH¢10,000 bail with one surety to be justified, has since July this year not been to court; neither has he sent any letter to the judge to explain his inability to appear in court.

Anas has testified in court about how the video recording of the doctor having sex with his victims without condom got into his hands.

Drah has been charged with five counts of abortion and operating a facility without license and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He has therefore denied any wrongdoing.

The principal state attorney, Mrs Evelyn Keelson, who presented the facts of the case, said in March 2012 ace investigative reporter Anas Aremeyaw had information about the suspect operating a health facility without a license, adding that through painstaking investigations the activities of the suspect were uncovered.

She stated that a video in which the suspect was having sexual intercourse with some women shortly before conducting the abortions for them, was subsequently released.

According to her, the police were alerted and they immediately proceeded to the place, where they found the suspect operating the said medical facility.

The principal state attorney noted that a search conducted at the medical facility revealed a container containing human blood, medical instruments and assorted drugs. Drah was consequently arrested, she added.

In addition, she said the suspect also admitted that he was operating the facility without a license and was consequently arraigned after police concluded investigations.
