When Naa Ashorkor gave me ‘that smile’ – on her wedding day (PHOTO)

imag0532The weekend of October 18 & 19 was very exciting and busy for me – not really unusual though. Short of reciting my routine schedules of ‘MCeeing’ wedding receptions, hosting a three-hour radio show and catching up on a couple of meetings etc., something more exciting took place this weekend. Two very good friends I have known for a while and admired tied the knot. Ahuma Cabutey Adodoaji (AKA Cabut) married Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku (popularly called Naa).

Their engagement – two weeks prior – must be the most popular engagement here in Ghana, especially after their pre-engagement pictures ‘leaked’ on the Internet and the entertainment media / bloggers got hold of them. It thus makes a world of sense why many people assumed there would be no white wedding. There was a white wedding but it was strictly by invitation and so I can assume only those who were invited knew of it.

I am not the kind who goes for events to sniff for info to do a review – whether objective or patronizing – especially when it’s a private ceremony like a wedding; forget the fact that a celebrity or a friend was involved. I still consider the event private but this is an exception because I owe it to Naa Ashorkor and I will later explain why.

The event was simply classy. The predominantly youthful guests were on point in fashion et al, and with the way those who attempted gate-crushing were bounced, one couldn’t help but breath an air of satisfaction and pride at being one of the few in the main venue. I need not talk about food and drinks because knowing those two (with Ga blood running through them), there couldn’t have been a mistake. Big things they say often come in small packages and buoy, the small packaged George Quaye (Aboagye) delivered on the Mic as MC. Okyeame Kwame, Richie and MsVee passed through. Everything was on point. Oh, and there was a formation dance by the entire bridal team (about 20 of them).

The dance was beautiful and it confirmed a few truths many others and I already knew. Naa can dance, Yes, and she can rap too. Cabut cannot dance, No, and he did not prove anyone wrong. Cabut always has a solid way of making nonsense the belief that all Africans can dance. Well, with his name, there’s no point even considering the possibility of his lineage being non-Ghanaian. He must have picked his terrible dance steps from ‘Kwabotwe’.

Both Naa and Cabut have an association with Charter house. Shatta Wale and Charter house were in court on Monday, just two days after Naa’s wedding. Well Naa and her hubby are not directly involved in this case though I don’t need to struggle to create a connection – Exactly what I intend doing.  Naa still works wth GhOne TV and Cabut worked with the advertising arm of Charter house some years back so you can imagine that the event had a huge gathering of current and ex charter house workers. And oh, the CEO was there too and his name is Iyiola A Y O A D E – forget how Shatta calls him…lol. Shatta Wale will be in for hell in court if indications I picked were right. I could leak and whisper to him though that ‘Shatta, a seeming sincere apology from you now can save you a possible marathon in court. Just do it.’

The only time I ever referred to Naa Ashorkor in any of my epileptic writings was when I wrote on ‘why the stars at starr may not shine’. I have not come public with the varied reactions I got from that article; which to all intents and purposes, wasn’t meant to be vile. My aim in this piece is however, neither to come public now nor explain what I wrote. I believe in my views, I take responsibility for them and I stand by them. Some literary works need to be consumed, devoid of emotions and prejudices to get their real import.

I believe strongly that the spins and twists given to that otherwise harmless article obviously may have made Naa feel ‘betrayed’ by a friend. Well, again I don’t apologise for my views in that article but all I wanna say is, as one of your loudest-silent cheer leaders, that piece wasn’t personal.

During the event on Saturday, a pre-recording of views from friends of the couple was aired. What caught my attention from the lot was by one of Naa’s friends who intimated how nice a person she is and added that ‘’if Naa doesn’t want to hurt your feelings, she has this smile she gives; and all who are around her know that smile’’. Well, I think Naa gave me ‘that smile’ on Saturday. I am not too sure though. Maybe it’s my ‘guilty-co’, maybe I had had a little too much to drink or just maybe there was a smile – a genuine one.

If the smile was ‘that smile’ though, just know I still have mad love for you and wish you well – professionally, ‘maritally’ and errrmm, personally. Have bliss and long live your union –Mr & Mrs Adodoaji.
