Ahanta West: Cable thieves bribe Police officer to abscond from cells

541937753_360093Residents of Egyambra, a community in the Ahanta west district of the Western Region are still struggling to come to terms with how 2 cable thieves who were arrested and sent to the police station could escape from cells.
The suspects who are between the ages of 25 and 30 were arrested by the community folks at around 4 am on Saturday with about 1500 mm of Electricity cable and handed them over to the police at Gyabenkrom, an adjoining community.

According to the residents, they went for a follow up on the case at the police station on Monday but to their utter surprise and shock, they were told by the officer, on duty, one cpl Zakaria, all the suspects have broke cells.

Asked how they managed to do that, the officer claimed the 2 suspects sent him (the cop) to go and buy them food in the night, but on his return he realized the suspects had escaped through the cell’s roofing after removing one of the roofing sheets.

However the residents are suspecting the thieves might have bribed the police officer. Their suspicion is being heightened because of the fact that, the cop seemed to know one of the suspects very well since he mentioned one of the suspects’ nickname as soon as they were taken to the police station.

They told  Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, in an interview that, the district police commander is saying he would let the police in question foot the bill in fixing the cables again after which a police disciplinary action will be taken against him.
