4ccd0e44278e61cd6b28fe00b37f52ed_LThree persons have been arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command for allegedly seizing a DAF truck loaded with 600 bags of dried cocoa beans at gunpoint and pushing the driver out of the vehicle, John Asare, to his death.

The suspects are Abdul Gararu Abdel Salim, a bicycle and motorcycle dealer at Alabar, Kumasi; William Opoku, a driver and resident of Gbetsile, near the Michel Camp, Tema, and Mohammed Ali Kondar, a driver.

According to the Ashanti Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Peter Baba, on November 6, 2014 the three, together with others on the run, used their empty DAF truck, with registration number AS 2605-10, to cross the path of the loaded truck, with registration number AW 327-11, at a point near Sefwi Boako.

He explained that the three persons hijacked the loaded truck at gunpoint.

The crime officer said the robbers tied Asare and another driver whose truck had been parked at a loading point at Sefwi Boako with ropes, including their mouths, blindfolded them and dumped them in the cabin compartment of their truck and sped off towards Kumasi.

Opoku and Kondar remained in the empty truck and drove off ahead of the loaded truck.

Mr Baba said at Otakrom, the alleged criminals threw the two drivers off the moving vehicle, but Asare managed to grab Salim’s shirt and fell with him on the road.

Unfortunately, Asare could not survive.

He said the other driver who was with Asare on the seized truck managed to run to the Akota Forest Check Point and reported the case to the police.

The police drove to where Asare fell off  and arrested Salim later.

They later found the DAF truck with its cargo abandoned at Otakrom and managed to arrest Opoku and Kondar on board the empty truck at Adiembra.

The body of Asare has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy while investigations continue.
