Polytechnics to become Universities – Finance Minister

767633627_835969Polytechnics in the country will soon be upgraded into Technical Universities following the adoption of a road-map by Cabinet.

Finance Minister, Seth Terkper, presenting the 2015 budget statement to Parliament on Wednesday, 19th November, 2014 said: “Work is ongoing on the conversion of our Polytechnics into Technical Universities. A roadmap has been agreed by cabinet and this house will soon consider amendments to the Acts establishing the Polytechnics.”

Still on education, Seth Terkper indicated that government will be constructing a public university in the Eastern Region as part of its policy of ensuring that each region has a university.

“Cabinet has approved the draft bill for the public university to be sited in the Eastern Region in line with our pledge to establish at least one public university in each of our 10 regions” he noted and added that soon it will be presented to Parliament for consideration.

Other highlights of the budget include the approval of a 17.5% tax on petroleum products, government to issue energy bonds and so on.
