The seized items included 10 packets of assorted cigarettes, antibiotics, valium, paracetamol and other medicines.

The items were concealed in cassava flour, also known as ‘konkonte’, and wrapped in a black plastic bag.

Briefing the media after the seizure, the Second in Command at the Kumasi Central Prisons, Chief Superintendent of Prison Mrs Florence Yamba, said during a routine check of items brought to inmates by their relatives around 3 p.m. last Monday, one of the officers discovered the items.

The items were meant for Solomon Obeng, who is currently serving a jail term in the prison.

According to Mrs Yamba, it was the fifth time this year that the service had intercepted such items during checks.

She appealed to people whose relatives were serving jail terms to desist from attempting to smuggle items to them, since the smugglers would surely be arrested by Prisons officers who were always alert at post.

Mrs Yamba said the Prisons Service was doing everything possible to reform inmates to make them earn decent living after their jail terms.

The suspect has since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.
