Prez. Mahama assures – 2016 elections will be peaceful

mahama_2President John Mahama has assured that the 2016 general elections will be very peaceful.

According to him, the prediction for the upcoming elections stems from a research conducted by pollster Ben Ephson on the impact of the outcome of the Supreme Court ruling in the 2013 election petition.

“About 81 precent said the election petition had made them understand Ghanaian elections better,”he stated.

The NPP, filed a petition in 2013, challenging the results of the 2012 elections at the Supreme Court.

The party alleged that there were infractions in the process that eventually favoured President John Dramani Mahama. The Supreme Court however endorsed the Electoral Commission’s declaration that President Mahama indeed won the elections.

In a speech read on his behalf, the President said: “I believe that the 2016 elections will be very peaceful because of the outcome of the research into the impact of the election petition.”

Mahama’s prediction of the 2016 elections contradicts that of the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South Constituency, Ursula Owusu who has warned of a possible violence in the upcoming elections if electoral reforms are not implemented.

Madam Owusu believes that the issues from the previous general elections that were exposed during the hearing have not been resolved by the Electoral Commission.
