Further reduce the prices of petroleum products – NPP to gov’t

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the government to further reduce the prices of petroleum products.

Government and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) announced a 10 percent reduction in fuel prices after incessant pressure from various pressure groups.

According to them, the decision to review fuel prices forms part of efforts to “reflect falling prices of petroleum product on the world market”.

After this announcement, some pressure groups described as ‘insignificant’ and ‘inadequate’ the 10 percent reduction.

Occupy Ghana, a pressure group, has called on government to further reduce the prices of petroleum products by 50 percent.

It has also asked the NPA to publish how it arrived at the ten percent reduction on the petroleum products.

Adding their voice to this, the NPP in a statement signed by its Communications Director, Nana Akomea, asked government to further reduce the prices because the 10 percent is not enough.

“Regrettably, the recent revision has pegged the price at over GH¢13 per gallon, which in effect means Ghanaians are paying about 30 per cent more for every gallon of petrol they buy…It had become a social pact between the government and the people and until now. We must not disregard the dangers that come along with throwing away the formula…It is very worrying that the NDC government is quick to tax poor, innocent Ghanaians. They are not so quick in retrieving taxpayers’ money fraudulently paid out by the same government,” it said.

Speaking in an interview on PEACE FM morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Nana Akomea said Ghanaians should not be buying a gallon of petrol for more than GH¢10, but the government had maintained the price of a gallon at GH¢17 until the first week of January 2015.
