PHOTO: Metro Mass bus sold GH¢5,000

Shocking revelation reaching DAILY GUIDE indicates that the man arrested by the Techiman police for driving one of the missing Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses bought the bus at a paltry sum of GH¢5,000.

Abdulai Zakaria, 49, who was granted bail by a law court yesterday, had confessed that he bought the 60-seater Neoplan DAF bus at only GH¢5,000 on December 21, 2013 during an auction at the Tamale depot of the MMT by one Alhaji Alhassan, the auctioneer.

The suspect has also admitted that a man he was yet to name at the Tamale depot sold six of the company’s vehicle tyres to him for GH¢150 each.

Those tyres, according to the Techiman District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Twumasi-Ankrah, had been declared missing by the officials of the MMT.

C/Supt Twumasi-Ankrah further hinted DAILY GUIDE that investigations were feverishly underway to get to the bottom of the matter as some of the key people at the centre of the said auctioning had been invited by the police to answer some questions.

Abdulai Zakaria was arrested by the Techiman police in the Brong-Ahafo Region on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 on the Nkoranza-Techiman road, with passengers in the bus from Ejura in the Ashanti Region and heading towards Tamale.

At the time the bus was intercepted, it had been re-sprayed with cream colour and the MMT insignia had all been removed. The original registration number—GR 1504-U—was said to have also been removed and replaced with an allegedly fake number—GE 7503-Z.

Meanwhile, DAILY GUIDE has in its possession a Way Bill suggesting that nine of the 12 allegedly missing buses were auctioned by a private company and sold to one man.

It will be recalled that workers of the MMT Limited embarked on a nationwide strike action to exert pressure on management to retrieve the 12 missing buses which were said to have gone missing at some of their depots in the country. The workers also demanded the removal of now sacked top management members and the board chairman.
