Farmer shoots dead wife for infidelity

The child, whose name has been given as Kofi Oti, is said to have been hit with the butt of the gun but he managed to run to a nearby town to inform people of the incident.

The farmer, identified as Joseph Yaw Owusu, left behind a suicide note which read:  “Because of my twins, I swallowed all that you did to me, but today, I am not going to see my children again. I am going to travel with you (Rejoice).”

The note, dated January 30, 2015, had the headline: “My will to the family”.

In it, Owusu bequeathed his property to his children, including Kwame Seidu, Lydia, Ama Debuah and Kofi Oti Snr.

The note read in part: “Everything in the room at Domasua belongs to me, except the foam.”

According to the note, the farmer had been enduring pain at the hands of his wife (Rejoice Nuvor) for the sake of their twin children.

It, however, said he was fed up with the situation and that he would die together with his wife and leave their children in the care of others. He said he was not happy with the way his wife was conniving with his father-in-law to put him behind bars.

Police

Confirming the incident to the Daily Graphic, the Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander,  Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Patrick Adusei Sarpong, said about 6 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2015, the police had information that Owusu had shot himself, after killing his wife.

“It appears the man suspects the wife of maybe cheating on him, judging from the age difference and the note that he left behind,” he said.

The Sunyani Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Samuel Yankey, said when the police got to the scene, they found the man’s body close to his door but the woman, who was still alive, was lying in a pool of blood.

The police quickly conveyed the two to the Sunyani Regional Hospital, but the man was pronounced dead on arrival, while the woman died shortly after arrival.

Chief Supt Yankey said Oti, who had run to town to report the incident when his father hit him on the head with the butt of his gun after shooting his mother, was in a stable condition at the Sunyani Regional Hospital.

The bodies of the couple have been deposited at the Sunyani Regional Hospital morgue pending autopsy.
