Emmanuel Aryee, the robber at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra whose attempt to rape his victim compelled her to jump from the top floor of a two-storey hostel facility, has been remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court.

The accused, also known as Kahn, was infuriated by the failure of the victim to give him the GH¢ 1,500 he had demanded, compelling him to attempt raping the final year medical student.

It is the case of the prosecution, lead by Inspector Martin Acheampong, that Kahn, a welder at Korle Bu, also robbed one Ruth Naa Dedey Aryeetey of her Toshiba laptop computer and Samsung mobile phone.

Appearing before the court presided over by Francis Obiri, Kahn denied the offence and was remanded into police custody to reappear on February 10, 2015. Prosecution stated that the complainant is a final year student of the Ghana Medical School, University of Ghana, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, while the accused is a welder specialised in straightening and a resident of Mamprobi.

Inspector Acheampong said on January 29 this year at about 6: 25pm, Naa Dedey spotted the accused on her corridor holding a folded polythene bag.

He said as soon as the complainant entered her room, Kahn quickly followed her into her room, locked the door and drew out a kitchen knife from the polythene bag he was holding and warmed her not to scream else he (Kahn) would hurt her.

Prosecution indicated that Kahn then demanded GH¢ 1,500 from Naa Dedey who could not provide it, adding, “this infuriated the accused who ordered the complainant to lie on her bed which she obliged.” Inspector Acheampong noted that Kahn then lay on Naa Dedey as he tried to pull his shorts down in order to rape her.

The police officer stated that Naa Dedey pleaded with Kahn to put off her stove at the balcony where she was cooking to prevent the food from burning, adding that the complainant thereafter asked Kahn to hold her hands so that she would say a prayer with him.

The prosecution further stated that in the course of the prayers, Naa Dedey freed her grip of Kahn’s hands and ran through the door to the balcony where she jumped from the second floor and fell on the ground. Inspector Acheampong noted that the complainant crawled to the main entrance where she raised an alarm and Kahn was arrested with the aforementioned items which were identified by the complainant and her friend’s.

He said Naa Dedey, who sustained injuries, was rushed to the Korle Bu Hospital where she was admitted, adding that Kahn in his caution statement admitted the offence.

However, DSP Peter Yembilla, the Korle Bu Divisional Commander who was in court yesterday, told the Daily Guide that the accused will soon be arraigned before the appropriate court for the charge of attempted rape.
He said police was currently preparing the charge for Kahn.
