THE enthusiasm exhibited by a police officer on duty to ensure that driver of Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GE 9902-09 abide by safety regulations on the road and does not unnecessarily endanger the lives of other road users has cost him his life.
Lance Corporal Solomon Okyere, 37, stationed at the Sogakope District Police Office, was on duty with his colleagues at a police barrier at Sogakope Township when passengers on board an Aflao bound bus reported a case of careless driving against a driver on the way.
Weekend Finder gathered that when Komla Aborgah, the Toyota driver got to the barrier; the policeman requested an explanation from him on why he was endangering the lives of other road users.
This inquisition is said to have infuriated the driver in question who drove off and almost knocking down Solomon in the process.
Taken aback by the driver’s behaviour, Solomon mounted his motor bike and chased the driver until he caught up with him at a toll booth some meters away.
There at the toll booth, the driver is said to have carried out his earlier threat by running over Solomon, dragging him under his vehicle over about a 30 feet distance before stopping.
Solomon, who sustained serious injuries as a result, was rushed to the Police Hospital in Accra but was referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital because the hospital did not have oxygen at the time.
The injured officer gave up the battle for his life before the following morning at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The Sogakope Divisional Police Commander, ACP Osei Ahenkan, told Weekend Finder that investigations are still ongoing on the matter.
He said the driver has since been taken to court and remanded into police custody.
He is to reappear in court today, Friday February 27.
