The suspect, Bernard Kofi Owusu Acheampong, 28, was arrested at about 4:30 a.m. yesterday with the aid of a tracking device on a mobile phone.
Assault
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Dansoman Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Antwi Tabi, said the doctor’s house was attacked around 1 a.m. yesterday while he was sleeping.
He said the screaming wife of the doctor ran into his bedroom followed by a masked man with a machete.
While in the room, Mr Tabi said the suspect told the man to be calm while he looted the house by first emptying the husband’s wallet and the wife’s purse and taking possession of their phones and laptops. He put all the items in a pillow case.
Rape
After that, he led the woman to another room and forced her to undress. Although the woman was said to have told the suspect that she was in her menstrual period, the suspect allegedly asked her to clean herself with a kitchen towel after which he raped her.
After he had satisfied his sexual apetite, the suspect allegedly asked the woman to go back to her husband while he escaped through the same means by which he had entered the house.
The husband later alerted the police, who used a tracking device software to track the whereabouts of the suspect. He was later found in a room near the St Martin de Porres School at Dansoman.
The police were able to retrieve an iPhone six, a Samsung galaxy SS phone, htc phones, a Samsung Galaxy tablet, an Apple iPod and an HP laptop.
Fumigation expert
Mr Tabi said 10 cases of women having been robbed and raped had been reported in the past five months.
All victims in the reported cases, he said, told the police the robber held them hostage with a machete and claimed he had been contracted to kill them but would spare them out of sympathy.
According to Mr Tabi, the suspect confessed that he often posed as a fumigation expert who went round residences of worthy personalities.
“When he is hired to fumigate the house and rid it of insects and rodents, he uses that as an opportunity to survey the house and find out where he could use as a means of entry into the house,” he said.
