Bride smuggled into Europe in husband’s suitcase

SuitcaseMainSuspicious border guards were astonished to find that a man’s oversized baggage turned out to be his beloved Russian wife.

It had seemed a clear case of human trafficking when EU officers opened the trunk and found the scrunched-up 30-year-old woman.

But after she stepped out, things took another bizarre turn when it was revealed that the husband, 60, was French and entitled to bring her into the EU legally.

One Polish customs man said: “We were very surprised to open the suitcase and see a woman climb out.

“She seemed perfectly well, despite being shut in the case, and not in need of any medical attention.”

The couple were travelling to Nice in southern France from Moscow and the husband packed his wife in the case before they crossed the border from Belarus into Poland.

The guards checked the couple’s papers and laughed when they found the husband was French.

The guard explained: “Unfortunately for them, she could have crossed the border freely anyway. Now they face charges of trying to breach border regulations.”

A spokesman said: “Foreigners cross the border illegally in many ways, but this is the first time I’ve heard of a person in a suitcase.”
