A story put out by some pro-Kwabena Agyepong boys that his office was broken into yesterday has turned out to be a hoax.
This came barely a week after the flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had called for an end to hostilities in the party, following the gruesome murder of its Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama, which sparked a wave of impasse and acrimony in the party.
Pictures of what looked like a disorganised office went viral in the early hours of yesterday with claim that it was Mr Agyepong’s office that had been broken into and ransacked by unknown persons, with accusing fingers being pointed at the party’s own internal security, the Invisible Forces.
Supporters of the embattled General Secretary took to social media to create the impression that it was part of efforts to remove him and the National Chairman, Paul Afoko, out of office, provoking fresh anxiety in the NPP.
Not too long thereafter, the party issued a statement to cure the mischief by denying the claim.
The statement, which was signed by NPP Communications Director, Nana Akomea, noted emphatically that “Reports that the General Secretary’s office was ransacked yesterday, for which pictures are currently being circulated on several social media platforms, are totally and completely false,” insisting that “At no point in time has the office of our General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, been ransacked.”
Instead, he explained that “It was the office occupied by the Secretary to Kwabena Agyepong that received some levels of vandalism on the day of Chairman Adams Mahama’s death,” recalling that “This unfortunate incident occurred at a time when emotions at the headquarters had reached fever pitch” and not yesterday or the day before as the impression was being created.
Whilst Akomea expressed regret over the issue, he gave the assurance that steps had been taken to ensure that the “perpetrators of this cowardly act are identified and punished.”
Letter To EC
Another letter from the camp of the NPP surfaced yesterday, raising concerns among party faithful.
The letter, which is dated May 27, 2015, signed by party National Chairman Paul Afoko and addressed to the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) in-charge of Operations, Amadu Sulley, and copied to the General Secretary, seeks to instruct the EC not to deal with any other party official apart from he (Afoko) and Agyepong.
It stated, “Further to our telephone conversation [Afoko/Agyepong/Sulley] this morning, this is to confirm that the party has not officially submitted Notices of Polls to the Commission. The only authorised signatories to any official communication to the Electoral Commission are; The National Chairman and the General Secretary.”
That was a day before the party was expected to issue the Notice of Polls, which, according to Afoko’s letter to the EC, was the duty of Kwabena Agyepong.
Some have questioned why Mr Afoko would write such a letter to the EC and copy it to Kwabena Agyepong, as though it’s a deliberate attempt to frustrate the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries scheduled for Monday, June 13, 2015.
