‘Only idiots can blame NPP for Sodom & Gomorrah demo’ – Obetsebi-Lamptey

Jake-Otanka-Obetsebi-LampteyFormer New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey has lashed out at the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for accusing the NPP of being behind the violent demonstration staged by residents of Sodom and Gomorrah in Accra on Monday.

Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey, who was the Minister of Tourism and Modernisation of the Capital City in the erstwhile Kufuor administration, said on Adom FM’s “Burning Issues” that “it’s stupid and a trait of idiocy to blame NPP for inciting Sodom and Gomorrah residents to demonstrate against government after demolishing their structures.”

Some angry residents of Sodom and Gomorrah embarked on a violent demonstration on Monday against what they described as unfair treatment by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The AMA, on Saturday, demolished part of Sodom and Gomorrah. Some of the residents claimed they were not informed about the demolition; neither were they provided any temporary accommodation to relocate.

A Deputy Local Government and Rural Development Minister and MP for Odododiodioo,

Nii Lantey Vanderpuye,

accused the main opposition NPP of being behind the violent demonstration the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah embarked on.

He claimed the NPP incited the angry youth affected by the demolition to embark on the demonstration.

But in a sharp rebuttal, Obetsebi-Lamptey said such comments and the usual politicisation of issues in the country are affecting the country’s development.

“People who make such arguments on issues of importance do not make any sensible arguments and must not be tolerated at all.

“I’m sitting in my house in Agbogbloshie; you come and bring caterpillars to pull my buildings down and you blame the NPP for inciting the people to hit the street?” he quizzed.

Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey said the NDC must rather be blamed for the suffering the residents of Old Fadama are going through.
