The 35-year-old woman identified as Veronica Nsowaah, alias Veronica Ennin, posed as the wife of a government official and used that alibi to dupe the car renting companies.
She was arrested from her hide out at Amasaman after five of her victims who are all managing directors of different car rental companies (names withheld) lodged complainants with the police.
Three of the cars stolen have since been retrieved by the police as efforts are ongoing to retrieve the rest believed to have been sold by the suspect.
Wanted
Briefing the Daily Graphic on the arrest, the Accra Central District Police Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kwame Owusu Sekyere said the suspect had been on the police wanted list after she jumped bail on February this year
He said investigations showed that the suspect rented the cars from the car rental companies for use for one month but after the expiration, it became difficult to contact her for the cars.
The officer said, the suspect later tried to change the documents covering the vehicles in her name at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Accra.
She is said to have later used the fake documents to secure loans, totaling Ghc70, 000 from some microfinance institutions using the cars as collateral.
Mr. Sekyere said the car rental companies subsequently reported the matter to the police at separate times after the suspect had failed to return the cars.
The cars were rented between January and March 24 this year. The cars involved Toyota Corolla saloon and Toyota Rav 4. The police has so far retrieved three of the cars.
Mr Sekyere said the suspect was first apprehended in February 2015 but she jumped bail after she told the police to give her some time to return the vehicles.
After being granted bail, the suspect went into hiding until she was arrested again on June 5, this month at Amasaman.
She has since been provisionally charged for stealing and forging of official documents by the police.
