d220bec149af858485af0753fb1dca9f_LA 56-year-old prophetess, who allegedly defrauded a woman and her daughter of GH¢5,000 under the pretext of delivering them from witchcraft, has been remanded in prison custody by the Fiapre Circuit Court.

The accused, Mary Amoateng, who is charged with defrauding by false pretence and threat of death, pleaded not guilty and is to re-appear on June 11, this year.

Facts

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Christopher Tawiah, said Mary approached Abiba Moshie at Jinijini, near Sankore in the Asunafo District and told her that she could let her gain deliverance from her witchcraft if she paid GH¢5,000 for the procurement of items to be used for a sacrifice.

He said the prophetess also told Abiba that one of her daughters, Adiza Moshie, also had a witchcraft spirit and as such needed deliverance urgently to set them free.

Mr Tawiah explained that the prophetess compelled Abiba to look for the money so that the deliverance could be done on time and she did as instructed by the woman of God.

According to him, the deliverance was done successfully after the presentation of the money and Abiba followed up with a gift of three pieces of cloth to thank the prophetess for her divine work.

Snake bite

Mr Tawiah said on May 24, this year, the prophetess demanded an extra GH¢200 from Abiba for further prayers for her and the daughter at Domeabra, near Sankore which she refused to pay.

According to him, within the same period that Abiba refused to pay the money, the prophetess was bitten by a snake and blamed it on Abiba and her daughter and threatened to kill them, if they failed to pay her the GH¢200.

Arrest

Mr Tawiah said the victim made a report to the Sankore Police and after investigations, the prophetess was arrested and charged with the offence.
