Why angry Rawlings called Foreign Affairs Minister “disrespectful”

indexEx-President Jerry Rawlings has blasted the Foreign Affairs Minister, Hannah Tetteh, describing her as “disrespectful”, it has been reported.Accra-based Joy FM quoted Mr Rawlings as saying that he was unimpressed with Mrs Tetteh’s decision to walk out of a three-day conference of African Mayors Monday, after she was told that the Vice-President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, would be replacing her as the person to deliver a speech on behalf of President John Mahama.

According to the report, when Mr Rawlings arrived at the conference Monday, he asked for President Mahama and was told that the President had delegated Mrs Tetteh to speak on his behalf, as he could not attend the event.

Mr Rawlings is said to have questioned the President’s judgement, stressing that, in line with protocol, it was the Vice-President who should have represented the President.

According to the Joy FM report, Mr Rawlings asked the ‘Mayor’ of Accra, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuje, to call the President and enquire if the Vice-President could be sent to cover the event.

When Mr Vanderpuje called President Mahama, he contacted the Vice-President and asked him to attend the conference on his behalf.

The report said the participants were still waiting for the Vice-President to arrive when Mrs Tetteh came in and was told by Mr Vanderpuye that the Vice- was on his way and that she should give her speech to him to read on the President’s behalf.

The development  reportedly did not sit well with Mrs Tetteh, who walked out of the event, prompting Mr Rawlings to criticise her, the Joy FM report noted.

Mrs Tetteh is yet to respond to Mr Rawlings criticism.
