A quack doctor who defrauded four persons to the tune of Nineteen Thousand, Seven Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢19,700) under the pretext of making them fertile after injecting and prescribing various medications to them has been slapped with a 12-year-prison sentence by an Accra Circuit Court.
The self-styled Gynaecologist who claimed to be an employee of the Lister clinic at Airport in Accra, collected various sums of money from his victims to enable them bear children after they had ignorantly sought solace in his antics.
The convict, Kofi Agyeman-Duah, who went about with the name Dr. Prince Boakye Da-costa, operated within the Kantamanto area in Accra. He took an amount of GH¢5,000 from three of his unsuspecting victims –Peter Osei Sampong, Regina Owusu, Lydia Osei –with a fourth one dishing out GH¢4,700 to him. All these summed up to GH¢19,700.
He also injected and administered various drugs to his victims who were confirmed to have been infertile for several months, until he was apprehended.
The court, presided over by Ellen Vivian Amoah, convicted him on four counts after the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that he had committed the crimes leveled against him.
Facts
According to ACP Atibila, all the complainants in the case are traders from Kanatamanto and Okaishie in Accra, whilst the convict was an unemployed but self-styled medical doctor, resident at Ayigbe town, also in Accra.
He said the complainants had individual problems of infertility and in the year 2013 they came across the convict, who told them he was a Gynaecologist at Lister clinic at Airport, where he made the complainants believe he could help them medically to overcome their problems.
The Prosecutor told the court that, he collected various sums of money from them and administered medicine to them, including injections.
He added that, the convict administered drugs to them for months, only for the complainants to realise later that he was not a medical doctor. A report was, thereafter, made to the police.
On January 1st, 2014, he was arrested and a search conducted in his room revealed some injectables, drugs, laboratory and x-ray reports of complainants and other victims, stethoscope and pictures of himself dressed as a doctor.
Some books written by one Dr. Prince Boakye Da-Costa were also retrieved. He denied being a medical doctor but admitted having administered drugs to the complainants because he had worked as a pharmacy attendant at various pharmacy shops.
He further stated that he referred complainants to hospitals on complicated cases. More people are reporting cases against him at the time of filing this report.
In another development, an Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a thirty five year old Drinking Bar Operator to fifteen (15) years imprisonment for defiling a 12-year-old girl.
The convict, Jacob Nii Odartey Lamptey, pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement of a female under the age of sixteen (16). He was, therefore, convicted on his own plea.
The complainant, Jonathan Addy, is the father of the 12-year-old girl while Jacob Nii Odartey Lamptey, aged 35, is a drinking spot operator, all residing at Korle-Gorno.
On July 20, 2015, the complainant was informed by his son that the victim was seen in a room with the convict, but before the complainant could arrive, the victim had absconded.
On July 21, 2015, the victim was seen hiding around Tuesday Market, Korle-Gorno. She was sent home and when questioned, she told the complainant that the convict called her and gave her GH¢10 and, thereafter, had sex with her on three occasions.
A complaint was lodged with the Mamprobi Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service and the victim was issued with a medical form to attend hospital for examination.
The convict was arrested and in his caution statement, he admitted the offence but further stated that he only had sex with the victim once and it was under the influence of alcohol.
