Ghanaian Muslims to celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr on Saturday

Sheik-Dr-Osumanu-Nuhu-SharubutuThe National Chief Imam and the Ameer and Missionary in charge of Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission as well as the National Hilal Committee (NHC) of Ghana have decided that Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Saturday July 18, 2015.

Eid-ul-Fitr is an Islamic festival celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan, a month long fasting period for Muslims.

A statement from the office of the NHC signed by its chairman, Sheik Mahmoud Gedel said in accordance with session two of the Public Holiday Act 1995, Monday July 20, 2015 will be a public Holiday.

The statement wished the nation a Happy Eid-ul-Fitr.

The end of Ramadan, a fourth pillar of Islam is determined by the sight of the moon on the 29th day of fasting. However, fasting continues to the 30th day if the moon is not sighted on the 29th.

Some countries in the far East and the pacific sighted the moon on Thursday, therefore Friday is their Eid.

In Ghana, the Muslim community is waiting to sight the moon on Thursday evening to determine the end of Ramadan.

This means that if the moon is sighted on Thursday night, there will be no fasting on Friday. But fasting will have to continue on Friday if the moon is not sighted.

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink and other physical needs from sunrise to sunset in other to pray and fulfill their spiritual needs.
