The Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) by the Ghana Education Service for the year 2014 shows that 98% of Ghanaian pupils cannot pronounce syllables.
This means only about 2% of the pupils can read fluently with understanding. Minister for Education Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman made this known in her speech at the opening ceremony of the 22nd Annual Conference of Directors of Education (CODE) on Tuesday.
Delivering the Conference Statement, CODE President Osei Kwadwo Hayford, who is the Education Director for Asunafo South District, appealed to government to provide incentives for teachers in rural areas.
