Gov’t pulls out of negotiation with striking doctors

The government has pulled out of talks with the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) over their conditions of service.

According to Employment and Labour Relations minister Haruna Iddrisu, negotiations cannot continue while the doctors are on an illegal strike.

“The government will continue only if they call off their strike,” the minister stressed in an interview with Accra-based Joy FM.

Last week, the General Assembly of the striking doctors resolved to extend their strike by two more weeks after threatening to resign en masse if they do not have codified conditions of service.

The doctors have emphasised until they sign a condition of service they will not return to the wards and theatres.

The Labour Relations minister has stated their stance is illegal hence government’s decision to pull out.

“In so long as they remain on strike; boycotting work, whether partial or not it puts us in a difficulty in negotiating. But specific to their conditions of service government will want to engage them if they call off their strike,” Iddrisu opined.
