Residents of Ho and personnel of the Volta Regional police command are shocked over the death of a young police officer who was shot by suspected armed robbers at dawn on Tuesday.
The constable, who was shot dead at a gas filling station in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, was said to be at his duty post keeping guard alone.
He was identified as constable Emmanuel Nii Atseku, believed to be in his early 30s. The incident reportedly occurred at about 1:30 am at the Radiance Filling Station near a GRIDCO substation popularly known as ‘power house,’ off the Ho-Adaklu road.
Although operators of the station have refused to talk, sources claim that about eight robbers invaded the place, apparently for a robbery operation, but the presence of the policeman scared them. They therefore shot into his face and bolted.
Sources close to the police say constable Atseku’s weapon was taken away by the robbers. other sources, particularly taxi drivers who had used the place the previous night, also claimed that the attendants closed the station at about 10pm for fear of possible armed robbery attack.
The robbers did not steal anything; neither did they destroy any property at the gas filling station.
The Regional police command has commenced investigations into the dastardly incident.
The Regional police commander, Peterkin Yentumi Gyinae, told DAILY GUIDE that the murder of the young cop was unfortunate, maintaining that the entire police personnel in the region were still in shock but would ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book.
