UCC: WASSCE Specialist arrested

The police at the University of Cape Coast have arrested a man who specializes in the faking of results for WASSCE applicants in order for them to secure admissions at the country’s tertiary institutions.

The Takoradi-based man known as Dr. Sam charges between GHC6, 000 and GHC8, 000 to swap the results of unsuspecting students who need scholarship to give students who do not qualify to enter tertiary institutions across the country.

On February 25 this year, the suspect floated an advertisement in the Daily Graphic inviting applicants for scholarship.
The advertisement was to invite students to apply for scholarship to pursue undergraduate programs in Universities across the country.

The add read:

“Ash to Gold Limited, a leading educational and Management Consultancy firm in the country, in collaboration with foreign NGOs in Eastern Europe and Asia, intends to give financial assistance to a limited number of needy, brilliant and talented Ghanaian SSSCE/WASSCE graduates with aggregate 06- 14 in Science, Arts, Business, Visual Arts, Agric Science and Home Economics to read Medicine, Nursing, humanities, Law, engineering, Dental, Surgery, Business administration, Computer Science, food science, Petrochemical Engineering etc.”

The advert attracted a lot of parents who submitted the results of their wards who have had aggregate 06-14 to the company of the suspect, Ash to Gold based in Takoradi as directed by the advertisement.

His company then gives these best grades to students who had aggregate 24 and beyond desperately seeking admission into tertiary institutions and charges them between six thousand and eight thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢ 6000 – GH¢ 8000) depending on the program they choose.

While he uses the best grades to serve students who had poor grades, the scholarships to the owners of the good grades never materialize.

One of his victims, who read Business at the Senior High School but was given BSC Nursing at the University was picked up when the father of the bona fide owner of the results she was using went to the University to lodge a complaint that the daughter never applied to the university but had seen the name of the daughter and her other details on admission list of the University of Cape Coast.

Director of academic affairs at the University of Cape Coast, Jeff Teye Onyame told Joy News the police and the university have been monitoring the activities of the suspect for over three years.

“Upon a thorough investigation into the matter, the imposter succumbed and admitted that the results were not hers but was helped by the Dr. Sam who charged her GH¢ 6000.

“Her assistance and cooperation led us to the arrest of Sam, who has been on the wanted list of the University for Similar Offences in previous admissions.”

Jeff Teye Onyame narrated how Dr. Sam was clamped down.
“The particulars that have been used in applying to this institution belonged to someone else. This student in question did Business at the senior High School and had aggregate 27 but the results slip based on which we gave her the admission was aggregate 08. The parent of the one whose results were used called the University to complain that the daughter never chose UCC but has been offered admission. The interrogations and investigations pointed to the same man we have been tracking for the past two years. The University of cape Coast police eventually affected the arrest of the 42 year old man”

The director of Academic Affairs at UCC cautioned other universities to investigate students who gain admission into their institutions and apply for their names to be changed.

“Other Universities should be on the lookout. Our strong suspicion is that he applies to almost all tertiary institutions in the country. As many admission letters he gets, he swaps them and gives them to unqualified students to enter into our tertiary system. The universities should beware of students who gain admission and apply for their names to be changed”, he lamented.
